One of the first businesses to call the Pepper District home is Kentucky Knows, a beautiful shop that makes bourbon barrel crafts, gourmet coffee and other wares. Next door is the Barrel House, a small batch distillery making Devil John Moonshine, Oak Rum, Pure Blue Vodka, and RockCastle Bourbon. Crank and Boom ice cream shop is one of the newest shops to open a brick and mortar on the Pepper Campus. They started in Thai Orchid Café and later were sold in their food truck, Thai and Mighty. Crank and Boom offers wonderful, locally made ice creams like Kentucky Blackberry and Buttermilk and Bourbon & Honey, among more traditional flavors. Middle Fork Kitchen Bar is a hip restaurant and bar created by Chef Mark Jensen. They serve unique takes on traditional foods like the PB&J. Also, they have small plates great for sharing or larger, entrees such as Hog n’ Oats, Beef Crudo, and Half Chicken. Ethereal Brewing is a taproom and brewery making small batch, craft beer. They offer a variety of beers on tap, mostly local and seasonal. They also have one of the best patios in Lexington! And finally, The Break Room is a great hangout spot to get a drink and hear live music. They also have rotating food trucks and a great patio.

Homes in the Pepper District are mostly bungalows and pre-1950’s homes. Many were built in the 1920’s. A lot of them have wonderful, deep back yards great for gardening or entertaining. Also, many of the bungalows have large front porches for socializing with great neighbors. Full basements are typical, some finished. Investors and flippers are starting to take notice of this growing community and are beginning to revamp some of the homes. Now is the time to get into the Pepper District! Home values are expected to rise as more businesses come into the community.
